About Vancouver

We are excited to welcome you to ApacheCon North America 2016 in Vancouver, British Columbia!

Vancouver is a seaport Canadian city located on the mainland province of British Columbia. As one of the most ethnically and linguistically diverse modern metropolis', residents and tourists alike appreciate the unique cuisine and worldly boutiques. With nearby world-class skiing in the winters and snorkeling in the summers, there is an endless list of things to do and explore in Vancouver.

Vancouver Fun Facts

The city was named after British Naval Captain George Vancouver, who was the first European to venture on Canada's Pacific Coast in 1792.

Vancouver was recently ranked as the third most "livable place in the world" for its high standard of living and quality of life. The city has also been ranked as the 10th cleanest city in the world.

Vancouver is second to only Los Angeles in TV production and third in North America for Feature Film production. Lions Gate, Paramount and Bridge Studios have all set up shop here.

Vancouver's Kitsilano outdoor, saltwater pool holds the title of Canada's longest pool, measuring 137.5 meters (almost the equivalent of 3 Olympic regulation size pools). This outdoor pool maintains a constant temperature of 25C (77F)!

The City of Vancouver has five sister-city relationships with Odessa, Yokohama, Edinburgh, Guangzhou and Los Angeles.

Things to Do and See

Granville Island
This former industrial site is now one of Vancouver's most beloved neighborhoods. Granville Island's former factories now house trendy restaurants, galleries and theaters. The main draw is the Granville Island Public Market. Often described as one of the best open air markets in North America, the market sells everything from baked goods to homemade crafts.

Science World at Telus World of Science
This amazing dome structure on the water is home to Science World. Known for its historical OMNIMAX Theater, the museum also has five permanent exhibits and a rotating gallery. Enjoy and IMAX science film or interact with the exhibits. Either way, you will be mesmerized by the geodesic dome!

Stanley Park
This nearly 1,000 acre park on the tip of Vancouver's "thumb" is home to some of the city's favorite attractions. In fact, you could easily spend more than a day here and still not see everything this urban oasis has to offer. Walk, cycle, or jog along the nearly 14-mile seawall that hugs Vancouver's waterfront or explore the 17 miles of forest trails that are much less crowded than the rest of the park.

The H.R. MacMillan Space Centre
More than just a tourist attraction, the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre is a non-profit community resource that provides a unique learning experience for all. Visitors can learn about space and the night sky through planetarium star theatre shows, live demonstrations and an interactive exhibit gallery. Next to the Space Centre is the Gordon MacMillan Southam Observatory. The distinctive structure of the Space Centre has become one of the most recognized buildings in Vancouver.

Vancouver Aquarium
Ranked in the top 5 aquariums in the world, the Vancouver Aquarium has more than 50,000 different animals that belong to 796 different species. The Vancouver Aquarium's focus is more on interactive exhibits and less on choreographed animal performances. Different exhibits mimic various habitats, from the icy tanks of the Canadian Arctic Exhibit to the colorful clownfish and black tip reef sharks sheltered in the Tropic Zone.
