Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina and the second most populous city in the state, after Charlotte. Raleigh was founded in 1792 and is the only state capital to have been planned and established as the seat of state government. Raleigh, along with Durham and Cary, make up the pristine Research Triangle Region, where 44% of the 2 million residents have college degrees. Within the region, there is the 7,000 acre Research Triangle Park - home to over 200 tech companies and 5,000 employees.
Raleigh Fun FactsRaleigh was named after Sir Walter Raleigh who is known for attempting to establish an English colony in the 1580's. The city is quite popularly referred to as the "City of Oaks" because of the beautiful forests of oak trees in the area. There is a new R-Line hybrid bus that gives free rides around the downtown Raleigh loop every 15 minutes! The Capitol Building was originally designed as the tomb for Governor Montfort Stoke's wife. When it was discovered that the architect had built it using the wrong scale, it was decided the building would be better employed as a legislative meeting place. Raleigh boasts more than 9,000 acres of parkland and almost 1,300 acres of water, offering recreational activities year round. |
