Raleigh is the capital of North Carolina and the second most populous city in the state, after Charlotte. Raleigh was founded in 1792 and is the only state capital to have been planned and established as the seat of state government.

Raleigh, along with Durham and Cary, make up the pristine Research Triangle Region, where 44% of the 2 million residents have college degrees. Within the region, there is the 7,000 acre Research Triangle Park - home to over 200 tech companies and 5,000 employees.

Raleigh Fun Facts 

Raleigh was named after Sir Walter Raleigh who is known for attempting to establish an English colony in the 1580's.

The city is quite popularly referred to as the "City of Oaks" because of the beautiful forests of oak trees in the area.

There is a new R-Line hybrid bus that gives free rides around the downtown Raleigh loop every 15 minutes!

The Capitol Building was originally designed as the tomb for Governor Montfort Stoke's wife. When it was discovered that the architect had built it using the wrong scale, it was decided the building would be better employed as a legislative meeting place.

Raleigh boasts more than 9,000 acres of parkland and almost 1,300 acres of water, offering recreational activities year round.

Explore the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences
The NCMNS is North Carolina's most visited museum and home to one of the State's most iconic landmarks - the SECU Daily Planet. It is the largest institution of its kind in the South East, and one of the nation's most amazing museums about the natural world. Come explore seven floors of interactive exhibit spaces that span two city blocks. From dinosaurs to dioramas, and microbes to meteorites, the exhibitions offer something for everyone.

Sample Beers from Raleigh Craft Brew Pubs
In the past few years, North Carolina's craft brewing scene has gone into hyperspeed. Raleigh alone is home to several top notch breweries, including Crank Arm, Raleigh Brewing Company, Big Boss, and Trophy Brewing. Come with an appetite to Trophy Brewing because they are known for making the best pizza in the state!

Walk, Bike or Run the Longest Greenway Trail in North Carolina
Along the Eastern outskirts of Raleigh, the Neuse River Trail follows the river for nearly 28 miles from Falls Lake Dam to the Wake/Johnston County line. There are several river crossings along the way, including two on suspension bridges. The scenic, tree-lined trail offers numerous wildlife viewing opportunities, especially on its boardwalks through the wetland areas. Open to both cyclists and pedestrians, the trail is the longest greenway trail in North Carolina.

Tour the Videri Chocolate Factory
The Videri Chocolate Factory combines the Southern love of all things sweet with details on how its products are made. Visitors walk through all the steps of the candy's production and get to sample treats at the end.

Paddleboat at Pullen Park
Pullen Park is located next to North Carolina State University, just West of downtown. Pullen Park dates back to 1887 when Richard Stanhope Pullen donated Farmland to the City of Raleigh for use as a park. In 1976, the Pullen Park Carousel was added to the National Register of Historic Places. The park is free, but some of the attractions have a small fee.
