How Fast Is Linux Networking

Stephen Hemminger, Vyatta

This presentation will cover recent research and testing in Linux routing performance.Although Linux has been used for many years as an open source router, recent advances in hardware and software have changed the performance possibilities and expectations. The talk should be of interest to networking users as well as developers. These measurements are of particular interest to those involved with virtualized host and networking. This talk will examine the overhead of: Firewalling - iptables, connection tracking and NAT, Bridging, Virtualization, Multi-queue and multi-core hardware, Packet scheduling (QoS). For each of these areas, the performance impact will be measured using standard RFC 2544 tests. These tests are typically done using expensive test gear, but scripts using open source tools (pktgen) will be available. If time and resources permit, comparisons will be made with the performance of older Linux releases and other operating systems as well.
