KEEP CLOUD NATIVE

WELL

May 20 – 23, 2019 | Fira Gran Via, Barcelona, Spain | #KubeCon #CloudNativeCon

The dictionary describes well-being as “the state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy.”

While the CNCF makes every effort to ensure the comfort, health and happiness of KubeCon + CloudNativeCon attendees there were some attendees at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Seattle 2018 who felt overwhelmed or unhappy.

Some of those attendees were brave enough to share their experiences and this lead to the creation of the Well-being working group (WG). As the largest ever open source conference, KubeCon + CloudNativeCon is breaking new ground which provides an excellent opportunity for us to learn how to take care of attendees at scale.

On this page, you can find links to important information, resources, and activities that are intended to improve your well-being at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Barcelona 2019.

Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the venue & surrounding area.  Knowing the layout of the venue and the location of key rooms and facilities can help make the conference experience much more comfortable and relaxing.  The Fira Gran Via is located in a new business development area close to Barcelona airport and connected to the public transport network.  The event is taking place at the north end of the venue so access will be limited to the North Entrance at Hall 8. Visit our Venue + Travel page for parking information and map of the area.  In addition, view the event Venue Map to find key locations:

  • Badge Pick-up: North Entrance Foyer, Hall 8.0
  • Keynote: Hall 6
  • Sponsor Showcase: Hall 7
  • Breakouts: Hall 8.0 + Hall 8.1

Knowing where you can get basic supplies, medicines, clothing, etc. can be very helpful. Here is a list of stores that may be useful during the conference:

  • Grocery Store – Not all conference food works for all people. If you have any food sensitivities or even if you just need some comfort food while you are away from home, knowing where the nearest grocery store is can help you stay fed and hydrated.
  • Pharmacy – Traveling can be rough on your body. Traveling on airplanes, trains, and public transportation, not to mention being surrounded by hundreds of strangers at a conference, leads to exposure to new germs and illnesses. If you come down with something while traveling, knowing where the nearest pharmacy is can insure you get the medicine that you need to get you back on your feet.
  • Clothing Store – It’s always a good idea to know where you can get more clothing if you need to. You never know when someone is going to spill something on you or something rips in an awkward spot. If you are flying to the conference, there is always a chance that the airline will lose your luggage as well, so knowing where you can pick up a new shirt or pants can keep things moving smoothly.
  • Technology Store – Cables break, adapters fail, chargers disappear – it is amazing how many different pieces of technology we need to keep us going, and knowing where to pick up a replacement if something breaks or disappears can be a lifesaver.

Regular running is linked to a myriad of health benefits, can help people lose weight, and improve mood and self-esteem. The experience can be quite spiritual, especially when running early in the morning. There’s something magical about being up before the rest of the world, taking special time for yourself to boost your health and energize yourself for the day ahead.

A morning run is a much easier commitment, are rarely dark or too hot and can give you an early- morning energy buzz. Running burns more calories than most exercises, it can lower stress and improve mood.

We are excited to offer Silent Yoga this year at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Europe. Vinyasa flow session is designed for you to relax and find your flow. This 30-minute silent yoga class is available to all levels and combines meditation, great music, movement, and breathing.

Yoga is a mind and body practice with a 5,000- year history in ancient Indian philosophy. Various styles of yoga combine physical postures, breathing techniques, and meditation and/or relaxation. In more recent years, it has become popular as a form of physical exercise based upon poses that promote improved control of the mind and body and enhance well-being.
You will always be safe in the hands of an experienced instructor.

WHY IS SILENT YOGA UNIQUE?

The headphones offer a wonderful new element to the practice. With one, you will feel like you have a yoga teacher right by your side the whole time. The headsets eliminate distractions of the outside world. This way you will be able to focus better and go deeper in your flow. Plus we get to enjoy some pretty awesome soundtracks!

Yoga mats and headset will be provided.

All attendees may feel free to use the Quiet Room as needed. It is a physical space where conversation and interaction are not allowed, where attendees can go if for any reason they can’t interact with other attendees at that time.

Partnering with Open Sourcing Mental Illness (OSMI)

We’re very pleased to be partnering with OSMI at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon Barcelona 2019. OSMI is a volunteer led foundation who aim to promote awareness & education and provide resources around mental health issues in tech. Our partnership with OSMI has three main parts which are listed below and will be mentioned during the opening keynotes.

OSMI Conference Handbook

OSMI has worked to create a ‘conference handbook’ to educate KubeCon & CloudNativeCon attendees about what they can do to remain comfortable, healthy and happy during the conference. The digital copy of the handbook will is available below and a physical copy will be available at the OSMI booth, mentioned below.

You can also download the digital handbook directly here.

Talk by Dr Jennifer Akullian from the Growth Coaching Institute: Mental Health in Tech

Having worked with OSMI before, Dr Jennifer Akullian from the Growth Coaching Institute will discuss amongst other things the shocking statistic that despite the 20% prevalence of mental illness in the general population, the number jumps to 51% among those working in the tech community.

The session will suggest “concrete steps for improving mental health in the workplace at an organizational, team, and individual level.”

You can find the full session details here: https://sched.co/NyYU

OSMI Booth

There will also be an OSMI booth in the sponsor area throughout the conference. The booth will be staffed by volunteers from CNCF member companies.

The purpose of the booth is to be an additional point of contact for anyone who is feeling overwhelmed or unhappy. Attendees are encouraged to come along for a chat with one of the volunteers who will be happy to listen and will know where to redirect attendees for further help if they need it.

The OSMI booth is booth #SE15 and will be open during normal sponsor hours.
