Jonathan Corbet, Editor for LWN.net and member of the organizing committee for Linux Plumbers Conference 2020, got a first-hand look of what it takes to pivot an in-person event into a virtual one.
With 6 months time, evaluation and input from some of the best and brightest minds in technology, and a desire to use a free-software system, LPC 2020 went forward choosing BigBlueButton as their platform. Much thought also went into timing, how much video-conferencing one can really take, training documents, speaker gifts of headsets and lights and more. The committee’s thoughtful actions resulted in success, with nearly 950 people registered making it by far the largest LPC event ever.
