5G Super Blueprint: 5G Cloud Native Network Adds Network Slicing

Building on the long-running 5G cloud native network demo work stream, the LF Networking community has fortified the 5G Super Blueprint foundation by adding network slicing. Based on the ONAP Honolulu release, this proof concept demonstrates an open source approach to improving QoS in 5G networks by optimizing resources and network topologies for 5G use cases, providing network operators improved performance and greater flexibility. The demo will also showcase a custom Network Slice Subnet Management Function (NSSMF) that was developed as part of this effort. (edited) 

Akraino Blueprints: Integrated Cloud Native Private Wireless

In this demo, we will showcase integration of various open source projects under LF and CNCF to realize E2E solution for private-5G connectivity. It also showcases automation required to provide 5G connectivity in multiple sites with respect to deployment automation of 5G network service with multiple CNFs, life cycle management of 5G services and connectivity & security automation. It uses EMCO for automation, Akraino/ICN platform for Edges/Sites with Edge/Telco K8s extensions and Magma/free5GC for 5GC and simulated 5GRAN.

Enabling Future-Proof and Open Edge App Management in Retail

The goal of the Open Retail Reference Architecture (ORRA) project is to create an open framework where retail suppliers and vendors can work together to deliver unique value to retail merchants and other verticals. Data trust is a foundational need for digital transformation, with reasons including interconnecting ecosystems to drive new customer experiences and business models, maintaining compliance with privacy regulations like GDPR, and detecting fake data automated by AI. Project Alvarium aims to address this need by building out the concept of data confidence fabrics that layer trust insertion technologies with a system-based approach to deliver data across networks with measurable confidence.

O-RAN/OSC/ONAP-Based Multi-Operator/Multi-Vendor Resource Pooling & RAN Slicing in Disaster Scenarios

While slicing advantages are available now, there are still numerous problems to solve that current network slicing approaches do not address. For example, there is no support of: a. Multi-vendor and multi-tenant networks, as there is not yet a common protocol for creating an end-to-end slice covering a wide variety of hardware, software, and network resources; b. Highly dynamic slice resource scaling – this leads to frequent situations where slice resources are under- or over-provisioned; c. Resource pooling in conjunction with elastic resource scaling across multiple operator radio access networks (MORAN).

This demo utilizes separate (autonomous) O-RAN/OSC/ONAP-based Service Management and Orchestration (SMO) frameworks for two (hypothetical) operator networks consisting of multi-vendor disaggregated O-RAN Network Functions such as Near-RT RIC, O-CU-CP, O-CU-UP, O-DU, and O-RU. During a disaster scenario, an overarching Public Safety SMO pools resources and manages slices across both operator SMOs and subtending networks. To realize multi-vendor slices, coordination between O-DUs & O-CUs is required to assign radio resources appropriately and without conflict. Resource allocation between slices or O-DU/O-CUs is provisioned through the O1/A1 interface.

Magma: Zero-touch Magma Automation With LFN EMCO

In this demo we will show how the new LFN Edge Multi Cluster Orchestration (EMCO) project can be used to deploy Magma Orchestrator and Access Gateway (AGW) on a Kubernetes cluster with the appropriate Day 0 configurations. The benefit of this integration to users is to help slash the number manual and error-prone tasks required to initially deploy Magma. The demo will also talk about the roadmap where Day 1, 2 configuration, lifecycle management, network slicing, and service assurance can all be automated.

Introducing L3AF, a Platform to Launch and Manage eBPF Programs

L3AF provides complete life-cycle management of eBPF programs with the help of an advanced control plane that has been written in Golang. Our control plane orchestrates and composes independent eBPF programs across our network infrastructure to solve crucial business problems. Our eBPF programs include load-balancing, rate limiting, traffic mirroring, flow exporter, packet manipulation, performance tuning, and many more.

This demo provides a quick overview of what L3AF is and then walks the viewer through how L3AF can be used to orchestrate eBPF programs. In this demo we will show how to configure L3AF to manage two of our L3AF eBPF programs: rate limiting and connection limiting. We’ll show network traffic behavior before and after the eBPF programs are loaded, and we’ll look at L3AF’s out-of-the box monitoring and metrics.

The automation and configuration used in this demo is checked into our open source repos. This means that anyone can check out the automation and be running L3AF locally within just a few minutes to try it out or get involved with development!
