I am a mathematician and artificial intelligence researcher at Booz Allen Hamilton and EleutherAI who specializes in natural language processing, ML interpretability, and AI ethics.

Over the past several years my work has focused on making cutting edge AI technologies more widely accessible through supporting the release of several of the world’s most powerful generative models such as GPT-NeoX, BLOOM, VQGAN-CLIP, and OpenFold.

Recently my focus has shifted towards building better understandings of how and why these models work, and what decisions engineers can make to instill desirable behaviors and limit undesirable behaviors in these types of models. I am especially excited about mechanistic interpretability research and work investigating learning dynamics of large language models.

Eric joined Google in 2011 and leads the company’s compute infrastructure design, including Google Cloud Platform, Kubernetes and Anthos. A recent focus is security for open-source software, including supply chain risks and helping start the OpenSSF.

As a researcher, he has led projects on scalable servers, network infrastructure, IoT, and the CAP Theorem. He has also led work on technology for developing regions, with projects in India, the Philippines, and Kenya among others, and including communications, power, and health care. 

In 1996, he co-founded Inktomi Corporation and helped lead it onto the NASDAQ 100. In 2000, working with President Clinton, Prof. Brewer helped to create USA.gov, the official portal of the Federal government.

Major awards include membership in the NAE and AAAS, the ACM Prize in Computing, and the ACM SIGOPS Mark Weiser Award.

Hilary Carter oversees the development of decision-useful research projects and content programs that support open source as a paradigm for mass collaboration at scale. Together, the Research and Communications department broadens the understanding of the impact of open source software, open hardware, open standards, and open data for people, enterprises, governments, and society at large.

Hilary’s career began in financial services with experiences in corporate finance, research and analysis, and global private banking. Her career pivoted to digital technology, where she focused on mobile communications and digital media consulting. Before joining the Linux Foundation, Hilary led a global, syndicated research institute focused on blockchain technology.

She earned an MSc in Management from the London School of Economics.

Gabriele is an open source executive and technologist at heart. He spent over 15 years building developer ecosystems to deliver value through open source across Europe and the US. He thrives on driving innovation both contributing to open source communities and joining commercial open source ventures, whether it’s for an early-stage tech startup, a Fortune 500 firm, or a non-profit foundation. Previously Director of Product Management at Alfresco, as Executive Director Gabriele grew the Fintech Open Source Foundation FINOS from the ground up, with the vision of creating a trusted arena for the global financial services industry to innovate faster, leveraging open source as a model of collaboration. Gabriele holds a Master in Computer Engineering, is a Committer for the Apache Software Foundation, and advises open source startups. He’s a passionate soccer fan, reggae music connoisseur, and special needs dad and advocate wannabe.

Dr. Angel Diaz is vice president of Technology Capabilities and Innovation at Discover Financial Services. Angel is passionate about helping self-empowered engineering teams drive success through digital transformation. An industry thought leader in connecting developers through code, content and community, Angel is an open source pioneer and one of its biggest proponents. Prior to Discover, Angel served as the Global Director of Engineering for Technology at EY. He also held multiple roles in his 22-year tenure with IBM, including Vice President of Developer Technology. At IBM, Angel was co-founder of the Call for Code Global Challenge, and established the company as a leading contributor to several open source technologies.

Cory Doctorow (craphound.com) is a science fiction author, activist and journalist. He is the author of many books, most recently THE BEZZLE (a followup to RED TEAM BLUES) and THE LOST CAUSE, a solarpunk science fiction novel of hope amidst the climate emergency. His most recent nonfiction book is THE INTERNET CON: HOW TO SEIZE THE MEANS OF COMPUTATION, a Big Tech disassembly manual. Other recent books include RED TEAM BLUES, a science fiction crime thriller; CHOKEPOINT CAPITALISM, nonfiction about monopoly and creative labor markets; the LITTLE BROTHER series for young adults; IN REAL LIFE, a graphic novel; and the picture book POESY THE MONSTER SLAYER. In 2020, he was inducted into the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.

Phil is a Principal Engineer for Amazon Web Services (AWS), focused on core container technologies that power AWS container offerings like Fargate, EKS, and ECS. Phil is currently an active contributor and maintainer for the CNCF containerd runtime project, and participates in the Open Container Initiative (OCI) as the member of the Technical Oversight Board (TOB). Phil has also been a long-time core contributor and maintainer on the Docker/Moby engine
project where he contributed key features like user namespace support and multi-platform image capabilities.

Phil enjoys helping others understand and apply container and cloud native concepts and speaks worldwide at industry conferences and meetups, and is a member of the CNCF Ambassadors program. Mallory Knodel is CDT’s Chief Technology Officer. She is a member of the Internet Architecture Board and the co-chair of the Human Rights Protocol Considerations research group of the Internet Research Task Force. Mallory is also on the advisory committee for the Open Technology Fund. Mallory takes a human rights, people-centered approach to technology implementation, with a focus on encryption, censorship, and cybersecurity.

Having lived and worked extensively abroad, she brings inclusive and grassroots coalition-building experience to CDT’s program areas, including “public interest technology” field building efforts inside and outside CDT. Mallory is a prolific and published author of works that demystify and break myths about how technology works. She holds a BS in Physics and Mathematics and an MA in Science Education.

Larry Kunz leads the Inclusive Language working group at Extreme Networks, a leading supplier of networking products and services. He also chairs the Language workstream for the Inclusive Naming Initiative, a cross-industry partnership within the Linux Foundation that promotes and facilitates replacing harmful and exclusionary language in information technology.

Larry is a seasoned technical writer, project manager, consultant, trainer, and content strategist. Tracy is CEO and Co-Founder of DeployHub. DeployHub is the first microservice management platform designed to facilitate the sharing, relationship mapping and deployments of microservices. Tracy is expert in configuration management and pipeline life cycle practices with a hyper focus on microservices and cloud native architecture. She currently serves as a board member of the Continuous Delivery Foundation (CDF) where she is the elected General Member Representative. Tracy is a recognized evangelist in microservices and the continuous delivery pipeline. She is the creator of the Continuous Delivery Foundation Interactive Landscape, a blog contributor for the CDF and speaks at many DevOps events such as CNCF’s KubeCon and CloudBees DevOpsWorld. Tracy is also a DevOps Institute Ambassador and speaks at AWS Marketplace webinar educational events. She is also the leader of the New Mexcio CI/CD Foundation Meetups.

Calista Redmond is the CEO of RISC-V International with a mission to expand and engage RISC-V stakeholders, compel industry adoption, and increase visibility and opportunity for RISC-V within and beyond RISC-V International. Prior to RISC-V International, Calista held a variety of roles at IBM, including Vice President of IBM Z Ecosystem where she led strategic relationships across software vendors, system integrators, business partners, developer communities, and broader engagement across the industry. Focus areas included execution of commercialization strategies, technical and business support for partners, and matchmaker to opportunities across the IBM Z and LinuxOne community. Calista’s background includes building and leading strategic business models within IBM’s Systems Group through open source initiatives including OpenPOWER, OpenDaylight, and Open Mainframe Project. For OpenPOWER, Calista was a leader in drafting the strategy, cultivating the foundation of partners, and nurturing strategic relationships to grow the org from zero to 300+ members. While at IBM, she also drove numerous acquisition and divestiture missions, and several strategic alliances. Prior to IBM, she was an entrepreneur in four successful start-ups in the IT industry. Calista holds degrees from the University of Michigan and Northwestern University.

Rishi is a manager and architect at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory with 15 years of agency experience. He specializes in the design and development of large-scale, compute intensive data systems to support space exploration missions. Rishi is additionally passionate about open source and open science initiatives. Rishi leads a program focused on instituting software process improvements for NASA ground and space software systems through a community-run, collaborative and open-source governance model. Rishi has published over a dozen academic papers and is always excited to engage the wider public through professional talks.

Vincent Danen is the Vice President of Product Security at Red Hat, which is responsible for security and compliance activities for all Red Hat products and services. Vincent has been involved with open source and software security for over 20 years, leading security teams and participating in open source communities and development. He is also a member of the OpenSSF Governing Board.

Jim’s career spans three of the largest technology trends to rise over the last decade: mobile computing, cloud computing and open source software. Today, as executive director of The Linux Foundation, he uses this experience to accelerate innovation in technology through the use of open source and Linux.

At The Linux Foundation, Jim works with the world’s largest technology companies, including IBM, Intel, Google, Samsung, Qualcomm, and others to help define the future of computing on the server, in the cloud, and on a variety of new mobile computing devices. His work at the vendor-neutral Linux Foundation gives him a unique and aggregate perspective on the global technology industry.

Jim has been recognized for his insights on the changing economics of the technology industry. His writing has appeared in Businessweek, Wired, and other top technology journals, and he is a regular keynote speaker at industry events. He advises a variety of startups, including Splashtop, and sits on the boards of the Global Economic Symposium, Open Source For America, and Chinese Open Source Promotion Union.
